Bookmarks for May 8th through May 9th [del.icio.us]
These are my [del.icio.us] links for May 8th through May 9th:
- Deb’s Unofficial Guide to Getting a Job in the Museum World – “So you want to work in museums? Why? You think they’re cool; you want to justify getting a degree in obscure pre-Celtic French impressionist painters; or you really loved going to your local museum as a kid and want to work there.”
- Blogger Book Club: Bach to the Future – Mind the Gap – Marc Weidenbaum’s interesting take on technology and composers “I also take pleasure in the reverse — transporting the past into the present: imagining what my cultural heroes of the distant past would do today. Would Bartók appropriate folk songs as raw field recordings (and be something of a rival to Steve Reich and Scott Johnson)? Would Tallis compose motets for near-infinite voices, and work with producers Manfred Eicher or Brian Eno? Would Bach have a day job at Google, and spend his time working on advanced algorithms that perpetrate wild varieties of melodic and rhythmic transformations?”
- Jeff Harrington, The Unwritten Chapter – very good and insightful review of the music of Jeff Harrington. “Those who rebelled against the century, but did not wish to write music from other centuries, were a constant thread. Even moderns would find time to write in styles from the late 19th century, and those styles would find popular favor. To call them “retrograde” is incorrect. To call the people searching for their expression conservative is, logically, inaccurate. Instead they wanted a sense of “soul” which was beyond the reach of their times. In this they were not far separated from the modern camp as might be thought from the music itself.”
- SoundWalk.org – SoundWalk 2009 Applications Due July 1 — The annual Long Beach SoundWalk exhibit of sound art will occur on October 3, 2009. Applications for submissions are due by July 1. Check out soundwalk.org for details.
