alt-classical EP fine!

a few weeks ago i thought i was actually done with the alt-c album. well… almost. i thought mixing was done and had a few tracks mastered and was feeling pretty good about the whole thing, that is before i started listening to the music on a variety of other sources (earbuds, car stereo, ipad speakers).

they say you shouldn’t master your own tracks (and if i ever find out i have a rich uncle i might pay somebody), but at this stage of the process i figure since i have written, performed, recorded, and mixed the whole album i think i’m pretty getting pretty good at disassociating myself to the music. to me the mastering process is really about just putting a polish on what works in the recording/mix and trying hide the rest in the seams. on the flip side the mastering process also makes it pretty obvious what wasn’t working in the first place.

right now i’m still pretty happy of where the tracks are, but after missing my self-imposed september deadline i might as well get it right and make the adjustments in the mix. i’m also pretty sure that i’m not being too obsessive about perfection and have tried along the way to not sweat the small stuff. at this point i don’t mind that there are ‘mistakes’ in final recording. note-perfect performances were never a goal of the PBE, but on the other hand i don’t want to release a recording that flies its dirty laundry front and center.

oh well, back to work

i actually wrote this a few weeks ago (October 16th 2010 and right now i can say i’m really happy with taking a #’th pass at the mix. i still am working on a track order and am probably going to go back and do a little remixing of “cheap admiration” which i actually finished mixing in 2009. along the way i learned a few more tricks and can fix a few of the rough corners on that track.
