the paulbaileyensemble (PBE) is an alt-classical garage band that plays the music of a variety of living and dead composers. The group was created in 2002 as d.i.y. forum outside the usual and limited channels of art music presentation.
PERSONNEL
Scott McIntosh, Clarinets, is a freelance clarinetist in Southern California. He is a founding member of the Illustrious Theatre Orchestra and has studied with the principal clarinet emeritus of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Kalman Bloch. The End.
Matt Menaged, Bass Guitar, has been playing with the PBE since it’s inception. Fresh off of a 2 year odyssey with the swing band The Kid and Nic Show, he’s extremely happy to be back in Southern California full time. When not playing music or teaching you can find him spending time with his son, watching a hockey game or playing poker.
Ryan Nunes, Vibraphone, just graduated from CSUF with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and decided to begin his existential crisis a few years early.
Jon Brenner, Guitars and Keyboards, Jon is an accomplished composer and performer who hopes someday to open a small ice cream shop on the beach in Pensacola, Florida.
Paul Bailey, trombone/kaossilator/laptop, is a performer/composer/teacher and is interested in composing and performing music using the broken-consort, open score and modular improvisational ideals. He has worked as staff musician disneyland and taught at John Marshall High School in Los Angeles and Viewpoint School at Calabasas, Ca, and currently teaches music education and music theory classes at California State University Fullerton and at music courses at the Heritage College Ready Academy Charter School in Los Angeles. He is a member of the arroyo arts collective and lives in Highland Park (a suburb of Los Angeles) with his wife Debbie, and assorted critters; Dolly, Javi, Peepers, Twinkie, Sasha and Lucy.
Sylvia Desrochers, Soprano, is a prolific vocalist singer and actress from Los Angeles California who excels in pop and opera realms of music and always put her beautiful flavoring into every song that she sings.

Nicole Baker, Mezzo Soprano, teaches music history and applied voice at California State University, Fullerton. She earned her Ph.D. at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she previously completed a M.F.A. in vocal performance and choral conducting. A specialist in the Classical era, Baker wrote her dissertation on 18th century Italian opera at the Court of Mannheim. A-R Editions published her critical edition of ballet music performed at 18th century Mannheim. She continues to publish extensively on opera by Mozart and 18th century reformist composers, and received a Fulbright Scholarship for study in Germany. Baker sings with the Los Angeles Master Chorale, and has also sung with the Los Angeles Music Center Opera and I Cantori.
Sean McDermott, Tenor, has sung extensively throughout the southern California area. He has appeared as soloist with the Los Angeles Baroque Orchestra, the Young Musician’s foundation Debut Orchestra and the Paulist Boy Choristers, In addition to oratorio, he has performed roles in Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, Puccini’s La Rondine and Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah. He has also sung on a number of movie soundtracks, namely Intersection, Oscar & Lucinda, House on Haunted Hill, Rock Star, Behind Enemy Lines, The Scorpion King, The Matrix Reloaded, Matrix Revolutions, Peter Pan and Van Helsing. Aside from singing, Mr. McDermott is also an accomplished pianist and composer, having written background music for Warner Bros.
